July 31, 2023- Update

Not much had happened this month in my flipping journey, and then on the 28th I sold an item and two more today. I took some time off and hadn’t sold anything for the month. This was fine by me and knew it would all even out over time.

I had picked up an used skateboard for $8.11 on July 26th. I am going to try something different with the skateboard and show someone who has interest in this how to do some flips. He is younger and I will walk through what I’m doing with him to try and help him make some extra money. Learning what I have over the years is always nice to try and help someone understand this to be able to ramp up a side income.

When I sold the first item on the 28th I went out and got a duvet cover set by William Morris that was on clearance for $42.22. I am very aggressively priced on this item, by being $10 under the closest competitor. With me buying it off the discount rake I feel a quick flip on this one will work out well for me. I should make over $20 on this flip, and it took me 5 minutes in the store to find it. This is a good win for me and I know this type of flip will work to continue to ramp up into a consistent profit amount at least over $10 an item.

I sold the Nike Lebron XII Shoe for $52.50 on the 28th and made $19.11 in profit after shipping it out. This is a 70% profit on the shoe in just over two months. Good flip overall, and I learned having the box for shoes is probably very important in reselling them. I am not getting many views on the other shoes I’ve bought at this point and they don’t have boxes. This is why I experiment with different items to keep this interesting for me and learn more.

Today I sold the tealight and the candle holder to the same buyer. I paid $2.37 for the tealight and sold it for $9.00 and made $8.00 of profit on it. I paid $3.78 for the candle holder and sold it for $10 and made $7.16 of profit on it. I was able to make a higher amount of profit on these two items, because I shipped them together. I refunded five dollars of the shipping to the buyer and still did well on both of these. I’ll look to get one item with the amount I made and had into these items moving forward.

I have 34 items in my inventory and need to reinvest $38.82 to be fully invested. I’m going to try and find one item to buy with this amount and make at least $20 on it. My plan is to get to this level overall as my inventory grows to $1000. I am very close to being at $500 in my change flip jar journey. I keep proving to myself over and over again this is something which is easy to do if you think about what you are buying and remain patient.

July 6, 2023 – Garage Sale

I had a garage sale on July 1st since the last update and this allowed me to sale some of the puzzles I’ve had for over or close to a year at this point. I lost a small amount of money on all of those I was able to sell, but this is fine by me for two reasons.

The first reason was, it moved older items which had plenty of time to sell and didn’t get sold. At a certain point I have to decide to move on from an item to ensure my inventory isn’t getting stagnant. If something has been listed for a year I have had the opportunity to see the amount of traffic I’ve been getting and most of these items weren’t getting much traffic each sellling period. This means I didn’t buy something with a lot of potential to sell. When I buy items I am purchasing them at a level I could sell them at what I bought them at or a small amount less than that.

Second, I want to keep my inventory amount lower in what I am doing and by getting rid of these older items I was able to do that. This puts me at a total inventory item count of 36 items.

I ended up selling five of the puzzles I had for $1 each. I lost $.18 each on four of them which were all the animal puzzles, and $1.37 on the Ireland Puzzle. I also donated the Christmas coffee cup because it was not getting any traffic since I listed it, and I lost $1.18 on it.

This leaves me with $21.57 I need to reinvest back again.

I made a correction in the list above from two errors I found. The NFL puzzle and Ireland puzzle costs were flipped, and I removed the Japanese Stein #2. I think I copied the Old Spice stein as Japanese Stein 1, but I am not sure. I have a separate spreadsheet where all of this is tracked and reconciled to it.

June 24, 2023- Update

Things are humming along since the last time I posted at the one year mark. I have sold five items and one got destroyed by my dog. I also purchased six items to get myself fully invested before the last two items I sold today and yesterday.

The first item I sold was two coffee cups by artists I bundled together for $16. I ended up making $6.42 on this flip which was 1.19 times what I paid for them. This was a good flip for me based on how quick it sold in about three weeks.

The second item I sold was the Dyson vacuum for $50 on craigslist. This was $31.06 in profit less my mileage to meet the person who bought. I like the flips on craigslist a lot because there aren’t any fees or shipping involved with the transaction. I made 1.64 times the amount I invested in this. These type of flips turning $19 in $50 really give me lot of good momentum forward. I’m trying to do more of these larger flips to keep the amount of items lower in my inventory.

The third item was my dog destroyed the Japanese doll I bought. He thought eating it was a better idea than me selling it. I learned a lesson that my dog could eat anything and to keep these type of things above where he can get to them. I lost $2.70 on this.

The fourth item, or third sold, was one of the six Granite cutting blades. I made $20.47 off of the blade. This is much less than I thought I would make on them when I first purchased them in April, but $20 of profit is a great flip for me and I am getting views on them pretty consistently. If I sell one of these a month moving forward then $20 a month in profit would be a good result.

Next, I sold a Peloton Heart Rate Monitor I bought on June 12th on June 23rd. I knew I could sell this quickly based on how many had sold in a month online. A quick $6.09 profit in 11 days is always a flip I will attempt to do at this level. However, as I continue to go I will move past doing these flips because the hourly rate is going to be too low.

The last item sold was the Roblox characters. I thought this was sell much quicker than it did, but a profitable flip is always my goal. I made $.82 which is a win, and the annual rate on this is over 38%. That type of return is why flipping works from a small amount.

Purchases

I ended up purchasing three sheet sets, another Dyson vacuum, and a coffee cup. I’ve sold lots of sheets over the years as a main way I’ve flipped items to make money. I am at a level to start trying these based on some of the larger profit amounts I’ve made. I think sheets could be a main way for me to get to $1000 from where I am now, but I will see.

After my succes with the first Dyson vacuum I’m trying another one. I found a similar coffee cup selling for $30 online, and the coffee cup only cost me $2.70.

I underinvested by $16.57 right now and may hold off until I can buy an item that is at least $20 and I can make $20 off of.

June 6, 2023 – Year One Finished Update

One year ago I decided to take the change I had in my change jar and see what I could do if I were to buy items with it and try to flip it into something larger. One year later I count where I am at as a big success to have started from the small amount of $36.38.

First, my last update I sold another item, the new hard drive, on May 27th. I did not end up getting the big score I hoped but still made $11.61 profit on it after selling it for $20 plus shipping. The Santa cookie jar was broken in shipping and I filed a claim with the carrier insurance. I was reimbursed for the item and the shipping amount which made cookie jar more profitable ironically. I earned an additional $15.41 for the refund of the shipping. This is the first time I’ve ever had to file a claim myself for an item with insurance. I don’t expect this to occur again. As well, I bought four more items to get me close to being fully invested. I bought three pairs of Nike shoes and two coffee cups.

Summary of the year

I am a numbers person so I will walk through the numbers of the year’s progression.

Initial Starting Amount: $36.38

Number of Items Sold Year One: 30

Largest Profit Made on One Item in Year One: $39.85

Smallest Profit or Biggest Loss on One Item in Year One: $-3.78 (Item broke)

Number of Items Sold I Made Money On: 27

Number of Items Sold I Lost Money On: 3

Currenty Total Inventory Possible: $384.35- Over 10.5 times what I started with!

Total Profit in Year One: $347.97

Current Number of Items in Inventory: 41

Average Profit on Items Sold: $11.60

Approximate Number of Hours Needed: 15- I was spending no more than ten minutes to find items when I buy them. To pack and ship takes me around ten minutes, as well.

Approximate Hourly rate: $23.19

Overall level of satisfaction with this: 10 out of 10 in Year One

Where to Go From Here

My goal moving forward for the next year of this is going to be to try and get $1000 worth of inventory to sell. If I can get to this level in two years I should be able to reliably make $50 a month off of it without much trouble. I’ve had this happen already with the inventory level I am at already, but it has not been consistent. Fifty dollars a month would be something where this could pay a recurring bill or even better start putting this amount away each month to build up for passive income in the future at retirement or some over life event, if I take the money out on a consistent basis.

I’m going to try and keep my inventory item amount low while building up to $1000. This is going to require me to keep moving up my average amount I have invested in my flips while maintaining the percentage I want to make off of them. This will be a little harder as I go up in item value. I also don’t want to limit myself either in what I am doing with this, so I could change my mind. There are a multiple paths I could go down to show how someone could make money from where I am at with flipping. At the end of the day I am enjoying doing this and will keep on change jar flipping away.

May 21, 2023- Three Sales

On Friday I sold three items in my inventory. They were the BOSE Alarm clock, Airequipt projector, and the Christmas Cookie jar. I made a profit on all of thiese items and they were all bought in April which keeps me moving in a good direction for possibly having ten times the amount I started with on May 6th of last year. This is a great result from what I started with whether I hit ten times my initial amount or not.

I had big hopes for the Bose Alarm clock but once I got the remote I found out the CD player did not work consistently. I had to order a second remote because when I ordered the first replacement remote the company sent me two Roku remotes instead. The second remote cost me more then the first one I had ordered. I listed it to get my money back and a couple of bucks after the cost of the alarm and remote were all included. I ended up making $2.63 of profit on top of the alarm clock and the remote. Still a win and at just over a month holding the item and this is fine by me, because I can now reinvest the $41 into another item and try for a nice sized win.

I learned I don’t know the shipping amounts to be charging on the larger items though. Normally, I have boxes around the house from things which get delivered to handle shipping things out. This time I did have one box which would have worked for the projector but once I calculated the shipping for it I would have lost money to send the item out. I ended up going and buying a different boxes which were square to fit the projector and cookie jar. They both were about $6 a box which is way to much to be paying because I was not prepared to ship them. In the future I would need to have more boxes available for larger items so I don’t get caught having to buy them. As well, I need to make sure I have accurate weights on the larger items when I go to sell. I took a guess on the cookie jar at three pounds and it ended up at last eight pounds to ship out. The good thing is I am buying at good prices and when I make a mistake I am still in a good spot to make money either way.

Airequipt sold May 19, 2023

I ended up making $25.65 on the projector when it was all said and done. Yet another great flip for me in this experiment. Almost 2.5 times as much as I paid in a month equals a crazy ROI again. I will attempt to take the $36 and put it all into another item I can hopefully double my money on again. I learned from this and the Bose alarm that they are both high in demand items with lots of interest. If I see either of them again I will know to pick them up at the right price.

The Christmas cookie jar was a good flip too. I made almost three times the amount I bought it for in just around a month too. I’ll try and take the $20 I have and put it into one item to flip and double like the other two.

I am currently sitting at $357.33 in possible overall inventory. I am $320.95 of profit in just under a year. I’m excited to see if I will get to $363.80 by June 6th. I need just one decent sale and I would likely pass that total.

I bought a casserole dish on 5/17 for $8.11 when I saw I was going to sell the projector to try and keep myself fully invested. I will need to buy a lot more though at this point I need to reinvest $90.73 to be fully invested again.

May 5, 2023- Sale and Inventory Update

Since April 23rd I’ve had one sale on craigslist of the the Yamaha Receiver for $40. I bought it for $14.71 and made $25.29 in profit. This is another good flip for me and is 69% of the amount I started with at the beginning of the change jar flip experiment. This is such a win in my mind for taking a small amount and trying to build it into something bigger.

Yamaha Receiver

I took the total amount from that one flip and intentionally tried to roll into into one other item. I found a pair of shoes online which looked like I could have a good potential to make another 50% plus on the total amount. It is going to take a week or so for me to get the shoes and then I’ll get them listed online and see how long it takes to flip these pair of shoes. I paid $37.86 for the pair of shoes, and with at least a 50% profit margin on them I would end up with $56.79. If I can keep up this amount on the next successive item I can build the $14.71 into a pretty big amount fairly quickly.

I also picked up three other items: a Dyson vaccum cleaner, Christmas cookie jar, and Japanese doll. These three items totaled $27.94 in cost with the Dyson costing me $18.94. I got the Dyson by purchasing it online, like the shoes, but had to wait a while to be able to pick it up. I have listed it online at $75 on craigslist, and based on what I saw this puts me under the average price I’ve seen it sell at and it is about 50% of retail new. This is another good potential flip. The cookie jar and Japanese doll are both within my criteria to be able to double my money on the flips.

At this point I am $314.88 in inventory possible, with only $.53 uninvested. Again, I am really happy with what is going on with the small amount I started with and where I am at. I could pivot in a couple of directions and try to specialize in a certain type of item and just keep buying it over and over if I wanted. However, I am going to try and keep going up the cost amount to take my inventory to a higher and higher levels. The reason I feel this way is because I am not trying create a monthly income off of what I am doing.

If I had the goal of pulling out a certain amount a month I would take the first option and start buying the same type of item over and over with a known amount of gross margin. Then I would just continue building up the inventory amount, because I know I could sell those items so much it would be consistent.

This is what I did for years with books. I sold into the tens of thousands of books. It is something anyone can do with an item if you understand the market of what you are selling. It involves running an actual business, or side hustle. I enjoyed it for a long time, and liked the freedom of making a decent amount of money on the side.

Like I have said in other blog posts, if you continue to think you can build up something good from a small amount of money. I still read other people’s blogs to this day to discover other thoughts about effective ways to flip. Never stop learning and thinking.
